Jim started painting at an early age, when in 1954 he used some discarded oil paint to do his first painting. interest in art grew in his teens with national awards in 1958, 59 60 His first showing was at the Seattle Art Museum in the Northwest Annual Exhibition of Northwest Artists in 1962 jim studied Art and Design at Everett Jr. College, advertising at the University of Washington and was an illustrator in the US Army. He received his professional degree in art from The Burnley School of Art in Seattle WA in 1969. In 1970 he started an advertising agency with an emphasis on design and illustration. Since retiring from the agency, Jim's main focus is now on painting In 1997 on a vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Jim took a series of photos using a digital camera, capturing colors, shapes and photos of local people. His sketch book became a constant companion, drawing everywhere he went. The first paintings covered a wide range of subject matter from flowers to landscapes, but it was the people and their stories and discovering the beauty in ordinary things that provided the inspiration to start painting again. The current paintings range from fiesta dancers to street vendors - each with its own story mainly of people of Cabo. Jim now lives and paints in Cabo San Jose del Cabo most of the year his paintings are displayed at Pez Gordo gallery located at the Shops at Palmilla. |
